Sadly, it is a fact that more and more of the elderly are without shelter or support from their families in India, this particularly so in Jharkhand. Extreme poverty means that it has become difficult for some families to look after their older relatives.

In Palu, Ranchi, DOM has built an Old Age Home for Homeless Elderly.

The building has been adapted to suit the needs of those who are of mixed ability. The residents have access to a Television and a radio, as well as games to help entertain and pass the time.

A number of the elderly still wish to keep their hand in with the skills in either sewing quilts or metal work. One lady recycles old saris’ and creates beautiful, light but warm quilts from them.

The residents are well loved within the local community, and have proved to be a great resource for a nursing School. Trainee Nurses come and practice their skills as well as providing them with a regular health check.

Several families within the local community, will visit to seek their blessings by gifted clothes and treats at significant times of the year.
